Treating the Root with Acupuncture
All modalities of medicine have their benefits. For example, Western Medicine shines in the case of acute trauma such as broken bones or medical emergencies. For more chronic issues, however, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture definitely wins the prize.
Traditional Chinese Medicine takes the entirety of a person’s emotional and physical current state and history to develop a healing plan. That’s why an initial consult is about 2 hours in length. The practitioner asks hundreds of questions about a patient’s symptoms right back to childhood; and from that they create a method of healing that is tailored especially for that person. The other benefit to this type of consultation is that it builds a trusting relationship between the Chinese Medicine Doctor and the patient. The patient feels understood and deeply believes the advice of the doctor. This is in contrast to Western Medicine, where a consult is usually no longer than 15 minutes and usually results in the filling of a prescription.
Chinese Medicine also considers the emotional state of a person and each organ is deeply connected to an emotion. For example, the Kidneys are related to fear. If someone is very fearful they may have an energy blockage or imbalance in their Kidneys. Acupuncture and herbs are used to bring back balance in these types of situations.
But it goes even further than that. Chinese Medicine even takes into account the effects of different seasons and elements on a patient. The TCM doctor will offer dietary and lifestyle recommendations to balance a person’s constitution and to help them maintain health.
Chronic illness is usually a result of a prolonged pattern of energy imbalance. By freeing up the energy with acupuncture while supporting a patient’s constitution with Chinese herbs and diet, health usually returns. After all, the symptom is just the result of an unhealthy root. If you treat the symptom and not the root, the root only continues to decay. As long as we are alive we have the opportunity to restore life to our roots. And where Western Medicine gives us no hope, looking to Chinese Medicine may be the answer.
