Seasonal Dry Skin Solutions

Christmas is my favorite time of the year.  The air is crisp, the Christmas cheer is plentiful, and the gorgeous snow blankets our little mountain town.  The only downside is the unescapable seasonal dry skin problem that seems to plague a large percentage of the population.

Dry skin can be extremely bothersome.  Some individuals develop dry skin seasonally, while others experience it year round.  Untreated dry skin has its consequences- the development of fine lines and wrinkles develop, leaving the skin with an aged appearance. The good news: It can be quite simple to treat if the proper steps are taken.

Steps to achieving a soft and moisturized complexion

- Use a humidifier in your house.  In the winter, our homes are often extremely dry.
- Wear sunscreen!  The sun dries out skin cells rapidly, and a burn may be debilatiing to your skin for a long time after.
- Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!  Morning and night- constistency is the key here.
- Avoid “chemicalized” products, and choose natural.   Often times our guests will come in with a skin complaint like dry skin, and eliminating the product and replacing it with pure botanical extracts relieves the problem.
- Use whole foods like avocado as a moisturizer.  Yes, you heard right.  Open the cupboards in your kitchen- there are many free and simple body care solutions right at your fingertips.
- Cleanse daily with a moisturizing cleanser. Products that contain  ingredients like Oatmeal, Apricot, and Jojoba Oil are good choices.
- Use a powerful moisturizing serum with natural antioxidants like Carrot Tissue Oil and Vitamin C.
- Exfoliate once a week.  Completely avoid “grainy” exfoliants if your skin is dry.  Instead, choose an “enzyme exfoliant”- these work more on dissolving dead skin cells as opposed to utilizing abrasion.  For example, at our spa we use a “Banana Leaf Enzyme Exfoliant” by Yum Gourmet Skin Care.
- Apply a moisturizing masque at least once a month.
- Remember to go for your monthly facial!  It is always best to be under the care of a trained professional-this will ensure you receive a facial regime that is customized for your skin. To learn more about our facials, click here

Happy Holidays, and I wish you all soft and supple skin this winter!
